In his rugby days Hugh was the hero of the London branch of the Thomas family. In due course we followed the rise in his career with admiration. Hugh maintained good contact with us Londoners and we shared many happy memories over the years. Even now one of my strongest memories is a crazy day out when we were about 20, walking over the dunes, balancing on the rails in Briton Ferry as we walked along the railway tracks under a flooded bridge, and ending up watching a Norman Wisdom film, in the front row and getting hysterical with laughter.
